Student Interns

The Student Intern Program provides undergraduate and graduate students with hands-on experience contributing to UITS projects, from web development and HPC documentation to research software engineering and cyberinfrastructure support.

Professional Skill Development

Program Overview

Student interns work alongside UITS staff on projects that advance IU's research computing infrastructure. Their work directly supports the thousands of IU researchers, faculty, and students who depend on high-performance computing, storage, and research software to carry out their scholarship every day. Interns shape the tools, documentation, and training that determine how accessible advanced research computing is to the broader IU community, while gaining practical experience that prepares them for careers in technology and research.

What Interns Do

Interns are embedded in active UITS projects and contribute meaningfully from day one. Past and current projects have included building and maintaining web applications, improving HPC documentation and user-facing tools, conducting accessibility audits, and supporting research software engineering efforts.

All intern work is mentored by experienced UITS staff, with regular one-on-one meetings and team check-ins throughout the semester.
